The
American Postal Workers Union (APWU) Health Plan offers both a fee-for-service
plan with PPOs and a Consumer Driven Health Plan. Both options are open to
employees or retirees covered under the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB)
Program. Located in Glen Burnie, Maryland, the Health Plan is a department of
the American Postal Workers Union. At our
office, we employ 200 persons, to service the 141,000 people who are covered by
the Health Plan. The APWU Health Plan is a self-administered and
self-underwritten plan, fully committed to providing quality health insurance to
eligible members within the FEHB Program.
The APWU Health Plan has been serving its members since 1960, when the FEHB Program first began. We are proud of our long-standing tradition of offering comprehensive benefits to all Postal and Federal employees and retirees, no matter where they live or work.
APWU Health Plan offers two exceptional options. APWU Health Plan's dynamic
low-cost
option is called Consumer Driven Health Plan because it gives back to you,
the consumer,
more healthcare choices, more control over your decisions and more support
when you need
your health plan to be there for you. We were the first health plan in
the Federal Employees Health Benefits
Program to offer this innovative new health benefit option, and one of
the first in the nation. We believe our Consumer Driven Health Plan gives
members more healthcare choices and a new way to meet individual health and
wellness needs.
APWU Health Plan's highly regarded High Option is a fee-for-service plan that
includes Preferred Provider Organization networks. The High Option offers a variety of tremendous and innovative ideas such
as the Health Plan's unique Wellness Benefit that reimburses members who have used little or no benefit in a plan year; and 24 hour-a-day access to a
voluntary nurse advisory line. Other
High Option benefits include an excellent prescription drug program, with no
deductible and low copayments. APWU Health Plan's Well Child benefit covers
recommended childhood immunizations at 100% if a Preferred Provider is used.
Members receive full coverage with the High Option's Accidental Injury benefit
if PPO providers are used, and in-network mental health and substance abuse
benefits are comparable to medical care.
Our members always have the flexibility to choose their own providers of
service-hospitals, primary care doctors or specialists. Many of our members
find that their doctors and their hospital of choice participate with one of
our cost-saving Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO). The Health Plan
covers a greater percentage of the cost, while these providers discount the
costs for their services. Additionally, PPO providers will bill the Health Plan directly, eliminating the need to file claims.
The High Option offers over 5,400 PPO hospitals and over 563,000 other PPO providers, including primary care physicians, specialists and outpatient facilities such as laboratories and surgical centers. Participating providers are found in all 50 states, plus Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
In addition to the thousands of PPO hospitals and doctors that
participate with the High Option, we also have a contract with over 59,000 retail pharmacies throughout the country. These pharmacies belong to the Medco Health Prescription Solutions prescription network,
and the pharmacies discount their charges and bill the Health Plan automatically for you. The Plan also has a convenient mail order prescription drug program for our members with long-term prescription needs.
Both prescription programs offer no deductible and low copayments.
With the APWU Health Plan, you receive the same excellent, comprehensive coverage,
wherever you live or travel, worldwide! There are never any geographic restrictions.
Your insurance goes where you go. We offer our members hospitalization coverage,
medical/surgical coverage, dental benefits, mental conditions and substance abuse
coverage, and several very attractive prescription drug programs.
